When your life is suffering the first assumption we all make is to look outside ourselves to see what is harming us, but most often the suffering is within.
How many times have you thought of something that occurred in your childhood which still haunts you today? This re-occurring memory of your past comes to mind easily because it never left you. All of what you had learned as a child developed the person you became today. Although some of those lessons were painful. Some even abusive. The protective part of you wants to shield you from those painful memories. You may have blocked them out so much so that only hypnosis can re-surface them, or you may have used drugs or alcohol as a way to block them out.
But nothing truly rids of the experiences you were traumatized by. They are buried but it does not take much to trigger them to bring them to the surface.
Have you ever suddenly snapped at a loved one and wondered what had come over you? Alcoholics will blame the alcohol, but that only helped the anger to rise up. Something lays deeper down below the surface. It could be that a parent beat you when you did a specific action, or your parent did not praise you or offer supportive love when you did well in school. Think about what your triggers might be. What gets you angry? How do you react when your anger is triggered? Do you harm yourself or others, even if just emotionally? Are you verbally abusive? Do you often have to apologize afterwards? Have you lost friends, family, relationships, and/or jobs because of your behaviour towards others?
You can seek therapy, take a vacation, listen to music, soak in a bubblebath, hug a loved one, take time off of work, go for a jog or to the gym, meditate, or do anything else you enjoy which you assume will ease your spiritual being, but nothing will actually rid of your hurt until you get to the core issues which cause your pain. The memories will of course remain, but by addressing and healing your inner pain you will be able to let go of the abuse which continued to harm you.
You see, even though you are now an adult, whoever or whatever had hurt you as a child can and will continue to abuse you if you allow it to. Your abuser does not even need to be near you. They may even be deceased now. If it was a parent, relative, sibling, school teacher, church pastor, nun, social worker, nurse, etc they might be gone now yet the memory of them lingers on in your mind.
Isn't it time you let it go and moved on to enjoy a happier life? Don't you deserve a relationship with someone who is kind to you and truly loves you?
Perhaps you have tried this but failed. But did you really get down to the core of the problem?
Start by finding out what your triggers are. Write down what hurts you or upsets you the most. It might be a person, action, or event that starts everything. If it is a phobia write that down as well. What childhood memories do you remember the most? Which ones make you feel sad?
You might find yourself hoping you can get along just fine without doing this but as long as you live in denial your problems will continue like a set pattern. You may even continue the cycle of abuse without realizing it. Do you have children? Are they happy? Do you feel you are a good parent? Have you ever apologized to them? Do you ask them if they are happy? Do you listen to them?
Once you have written out your Anger List next write out a Sad List. Write down all that makes you cry.
When done, write beside each one what you can do to address those issues. For example, if your mother upsets you because she is cold and abrupt to you when you telephone her then think of what you can do to change the effect it has on you. Not what you can do to change her, because you and I both know that there is little chance she will change at this point in her life. So what has to change is you; the way you take things and choose to react to them. I use the word "choose" because you do have a "choice". We all have a choice in how we live our lives. Your soul wants you to make good choices for yourself. In death the most common feeling your soul has is regret. You are here to heal your soul, to let go of your inner pain, to heal yourself, to make happier choices for your life, so that you are content with who you became, with what you accomplished, and others will be grateful to have known you. In doing this you also help your children and other loved ones to live a happier life. Not only do you break the abusive cycle in your own life but in theirs as well.
Now make a Happy List. Write down all the things which you enjoy and love doing. Add as many as possible and be detailed. It might be people, certain movies, dancing, singing, sports, exercise, foods, pets, etc.
Everytime you feel angry, read your Angry List and find a solution.
When you feel sad, read your Happy List and pick one from the list and do it. At first you might resist but once you are doing one from your list you will in fact begin to feel better and be grateful that you decided to try it.
